Why post a job if you've already filled it?

An email was sent out on Monday about an open position on the same account I am working on. It's quite different from what I am doing now so I was somewhat interested. I asked my supervisor about it and he gave me some info but not much. He also told me who else worked in that area, so I emailed those people.

No response on Tuesday, but today I come in and there is an email that says they filled the position. Sounds like they already had it filled before posting it. WTF?

I also did get a response from one of the people who works in that area but it's pointless now.

Yeah i've dealt with that before. I actually interviewed for a job once and upon doing a follow-up call they admitted that they already had someone internal they were going to hire before they even posted the job. They said they liked me for the job otherwise though... gee thanks.

HR rules stating you have to at least post the position.

this. happens all the time.

Hell, I had to go through the process of interviewing candidates for a position that didn't even exist; I suppose it had been posted long after it was filled, and people ignored that it was out there.

People had been applying for months. And yes, I shouldn't even have been the one to interview candidates. My boss just didn't want to deal with it. :\

Sucks though, especially when there aren't any jobs available.

Often companies will refresh postings regularly so they appear more current and attract more candidates. It's frequently an automatic process or assigned to someone who has no idea what the job's status actually is other than "open".

Other times they are required by law or internal policy to post even if they have a desired candidate.

And other times they may want to have candidates in the pipeline if they aren't sure their current interviewees will make the cut.
