I guess I'm a minority here.

There are many games I want to play but I only play one game at a time, and rarely I have any sort of physical/digital back log.

It's very difficult for me to play multiple games at the same time because I would not be able to keep up with remembering the controls/key bindings :p

I've actually run into this lately. I was playing through about 5 different PS3 games at the same time, but I didn't have much time to play them. So, I spent the first 20 minutes every time trying to remember all the controls :).

I've changed my habits though. I'm going to play through one game (on each system) until it's done and move on to the next. Right now I've got Titan Quest for the PC, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction for the PS3, and Final Fantasy X for the PS2 (which will get by far the least amount of my gaming time).

There is no Galactic Civilizations III.
And Galactic Civilizations 2 is a pale imitation at best.
Imperium Galactica 2, on the other hand, is excellent but doesnt run well under Windows XP.
Pax Imperia 2 runs alright but isnt much of a game.
Space Empires doesnt fill any requirements of mine.
Sins of a Solar Empire is good, but didnt drag me in and keep me.

You should give Sword of the Stars a try, preferably with all the expansions.

I have that, with the Argos Shipyard expansion.
Did not like, but it was dirt cheap on Steam so it was worth the experiment.
Damn, Steam is gonna kill me. WAAAYYYY too much shit I have only touched briefly.

Games are steadily getting cheaper. If you already have a backlog of interesting games you haven't played yet, just don't buy new ones. Easier said than done, but consider the $20 sale for batman: AA right now. That's a great deal if you were going to be playing it right away, but if you still have 20 games to get through first then $20 will be the normal price by the time you are ready to play it. Buying it now isn't really saving you anything since any savings are offset by spending your money earlier than you needed to (time value of money).

Also, pretty much everybody I know has gone through a completist phase (watch every movie, listen to every CD, play every game, do all of something) at one point. It always ends the same way when they figure out that for every gem there is a lot of garbage and life is much too short to be spent on garbage. If you're an hour into a game and not really enjoying it, move on and do something you do enjoy.

I unload on older games I don't play anymore to buy new ones, usually. Amazon Marketplace is a great place to unload them.

That said, there are games where I do play over and over. And then there are games I buy, play for one hour, and put back on the shelf, never to play it ever again.

Play games that you truly enjoy. Life is too short to be obsessing over uncompleted video games and movies. Truth is, no matter how much you want to, you won't be able to play them all.

That's my problem. I'll get a backlog of games, but then sales on new ones entice me to buy them and play them instead of my "old" games. I still have PS2 games that I never finished :(

I am also guilty of buying more games than I have the time to play, for both PC and consoles. The steam sales are especially bad for impulse buys.

One of my big problems is starting and game and then getting distracted. For example I started Mass Effect:2 months ago then got distracted by Just Cause 2, and various multiplayer games. Now I'm going to have to start back at the beginning again.
