why only one rom in macs?

i know they offer combo and 'super' drives in their machines but why only one?

is an external rom the only way to copy on the fly with macs?

First, please only post once. Extra posts push other threads to the bottom, making it hard for us to keep up.

There are many possible reasons (here are some I thought of off the top of my head):
1) Very few people copy on the fly.
2) Macs are expensive enough, adding another drive adds more to the initial price.
3) Until quite recently Macs couldn't write any CDs, so give them time. Soon Mac users will see a use for copying a CD and this may very well be included.
4) To keep the look clean and simple. A computer with extra drives that the vast majority don't need isn't a clean and simple computer.
5) Maybe Apple wants its customers to follow the law.
6) No one needs to copy on the fly, just copy it to your HD. Sure it takes 1 more step, but it isn't hard at all.

sorry i thought the other post cancelled

my machine locked up

i guess on the fly is only if you want something bootable

This may sound rediculous, but companies think this way. Apple has always wanted to keep things simple for users who dont' know anything (so they don't have to know anything.) Two drives would confuse some people (^_^😉

to think of it if somebody has removable magnetic media and there are more than one media drive shown by the machine the user often doesn't know which drive to access

the icon for a flash reader looks like the icon for a zip looks like the icon for the hdd looks like the icon for the partition

only the floppy has a diff looking icon

i can see why apple has media mount on the desktop, a feature i'm not too crazy about yet
