Why only 3 low-res pictures of Titan so far?

Why are these first images in black and white? Hard to tell if it's a stone, ice, or ball of yarn.

I could have donated my old Fuji FinePix 1300 1.3MP camera if they would have asked.

Give it a little time. Theyve been so eager to get the first pictures that theyre wasting as little time getting as many as they can....they can get B/W pics three times faster than the color per pixel, so I'm sure in due time we'll have plenty of high-res color pics of titan. Be glad it actually landed. 😛

I'm assuming they actually have a color cam/filters on that thing, but that would be pretty stupid not to eh?

It is European...

The Europeans are playing close to the chest with the pics, I hear there may be a rough video of the descent coming.

I also heard the probe is now dead, It was expected to only have a 2 hour lifespan on the surface.

they released a few immediately for publicity, i read an article earlier saying theyre going to refine them or composite the smaller shots into larger ones and hope to be releasing those soon.

anyway, i think its pretty damn cool and am interested in seeing what kind of pictures it took. I wonder if they'll release the audio at some point, it had a microphone on it. should be interesting to see what there is to see on titan.

All the pictures are in B&W, they just use 3 coloured filters and remerge them back to get a colour image.

I doubt your Finepix could survive the where this camera has been.

I wonder if they had an environmental impact study prepared. Is the probe biodegradable? We pollute our planet, and then we litter the galaxy with out dead space probes.

It is just not right. :|

Ha. The CCD on that camera is a piece of shyt compared to the stuff these guys are using. These CCDs are much much more sensitive than your average consumer CCD. A 2 MP astronomical grade CCD can cost $5k easily.

The CCD itself is b/w but if they wanted colour images they could just take 3 images with 3 different filters in place.

Why 2 hours? What is it about titan that is such a harsh environment? There cant be much of an atmosphere out there, but then again, if its supposedly to be reminicent of early earth...

The battery just wasn't supposed to last a long time.

I imagine the cold would be a big issue with the environment.

Actually IIRC, the atmosphere of Titan is thicker than ours. Made mostly of nitrogen with hydrocarbons (methane, acetylene etc) making up the rest. Pretty comparable, save for the temperature.

But yeah it's a temperature issue I'd think.

probably had to do with the power supply --- solar power won't work with the thick atmosphere so far from the sun -- and becuase batteries are so heavy, they could only get two hours worth on board.

Hmm...too bad they couldnt figure out some way to keep it alive longer. Cool stuff though! Hopefully they discover something worthwhile!
