Why OEM or Retail?

Lookin at XP Pro here, with the coupon for Vista upgrade....

Obviously OEM is cheaper, but you can't move to another hard drive without doing a fresh install.

Is there any other reasons to choose retail? There can be a significant difference in cost.

Retail can be installed on one PC, then removed and installed on another PC instead, over and over, because it's licensed to you instead of to the PC. So it's reusable. You can also uninstall it and sell the license and media off by themselves. Retail can also do upgrades, as you noted. If you were going to buy Retail, you might want to just wait 'til January 30th and get Vista instead of XP, because I don't see Retail being offered with the upgrade coupons.

One possible fringe benefit of OEM WinXP licenses is that they give you downgrade rights if you want to use Win2000, WinME or Win98 instead. And of course the up-front cost is lower, and you have the Vista upgrade-coupon option.
