Why not use prisoners more effectively?

Your nation have the highest rates of incarcerations in thee world.

For those with no violent crimes put them to productive work in such a way, the country and the community benefits.

For non violent criminals (relatively speaking), the offenders could be evaluated, given training and work in monitored environments.

For violent felons, Use them for heavy duty work in harsh and strict environments.

For death row convicts, Use them for testing new drugs and therapies. For instance, many convicts have medical problems more than an expanded anus.

Another offshoot of this idea is letting prisons market their gear under the names and styles of famous and notorious prisoners. But the state would own all the profits and it shall go to the victims or back to the system itself.

Oh, btw BoomerD, sorry for all these what if threads, I know you hate them.

:hmm:

Don't mind me for disturbing you on your date with Scheinderguy.

"Forced" labor violates human rights. Human rights they don't deserve, but it is what it is.

Actually that's a terrible idea because it encourages the state to create even stricter laws with longer sentences in order to have an endless supply of slave labor. When they need more slaves, they'll decide that people downloading music torrents should get 20 years in a labor camp.

In a republic, the state shouldn't be at odds with the people, but yeah I get what you're saying.

This will happen only in a fascist or communist country.

Not in free countries like yours

Unless you let the penal wardens run the natio, of course.

Anytime you put cash in the hands of a bureaucracy and expect it not to be touched by corruption, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Once a prisoner is making a cashflow, there's incentive to keep them a prisoner, which goes against the spirit of rehabilitation, which is the purported purpose of imprisonment today.

Not like all of them are sitting in a cell everyday, some are put to useful tasks. Pretty common here to see them on the side of the roads picking up trash.

Here too but they don't appear to be the most motivated workers. Kind of like the Dept. of Trans. workers.:\

It's actually going on at right now and its concept is worse than you could imagine. Google prison-industrial complex.

Imagine the appeal of companies paying prisoners pennies per hour to produce goods. Then imagine them lobbying for stricter laws so that more people can end up prison to essentially become slave labor. Imagine the inability for normal methods of production being inable to compete. Now imagine that it's actually going on. Scary and messed up stuff.

I don't remember the exact history but this is the reason prisons got out of the manufacturing in S.C. The voters put an end to it.

Isn't it the US that has "chain gangs" that do things like clean the highways and print license plates? :D

In mates should be educated, trained, given useful skills. I don't know about you guys but if I got busted for selling rocks and I leave jail with the same zero marketable skills I had when I went in, I would go right back to selling rocks. What else am I going to do? Work at Wendys? Fuck that. Selling rocks pays better. If I were a certified welder I could do that instead.

So you're saying I can sell drugs, make tons of cash, and in the event that I get arrested, they'll educate me in a certified trade then I can leave making a ton of legit money?

Where can I find alternator sized rocks?

Come to think of it, I think the civil war was somehow related to slavery. Something about the south having an endless supply of cheap labor, the north had no possible way of competing against the south in the free market. All of production goes to the south. North is a barren wasteland because no sane person wants to pay white people 1 penny per day when he could just as easily pay black people 0 pennies per day for the same product....

That would sure fuck up the local economy too. You own a company that empties the garbage cans at bus stops. Suddenly it's done by prison labor. Your company = out of business. All construction workers would be replaced as well.

I read about it a little while ago and it was pretty disturbing and while it's awesome that they got rid of it in S.C I feel that it's still very prevalent in other parts of the country. i feel it's just something too tempting for large corps to pass over and since they got the money to push it they probably won't stop unless there's some large scale crack down/reform.

You don't need to sell drugs to become a welder. Ok that's a lie. I have never met a welder that wasn't a sketchy bastard.

If you want to be one of the legit tradesmen like a plumber or an electrician, you apply to be an apprentice with a company. You don't need any education at all. You walking in the door as an apprentice is the same as an engineering walking into his first university classes. They train you, they sponsor you to get trained at a trade school, and that goes back and forth for 4 years. After 4 years, you get your journeyman ticket and can be a union member who refuses to work unless he gets paid $90/h and has full pension at the age of 25.
A lot of first or second year electrician apprentices are paid more than engineers in training. Engineer is training is your official status when you first graduate university with an engineering degree and have less than ~3 years of experience.

Because things like this will happen: http://articles.cnn.com/2009-02-23/...dges-number-of-juvenile-offenders?_s=PM:CRIME

The county has been rocked by a kickback scandal involving two elected judges who essentially jailed kids for cash. Many of the children had appeared before judges without a lawyer.

American business will go to ANY lengths to make money. They hire illegal immigrants and they will pull shit like this to get more business. If you allow the public sector to "use" prisoners, they will ensure a steady and non-stop supply exists.
