Why not teach the alphabet to new kids as qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm

It makes more sense to teach it as qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm. The current "order" is just as arbitrary, so why not change it to an order that has meaning?

a, b, c, ch, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, ll, m, n, ñ, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z

Might as well teach them that.

If we're going that far, we should probably just try to advance the Dvorak layout.

You know, on the face of it, that sure seems like a good idea...

QWERTY is virtually arbitrary. I say virtually because it was intentionally designed to slow typists down. While I'm on the subject, it's bullsh!t that keyboards still have the keys slanted diagonally instead of aligned with finger movement, just because mechanical typewriters had to be made this way.

the only 'downside' I see is that phrases like "It's the ABC's of computing" and similar would lose their meaning and have to be replaced with "It's the QWE's of computing"

That's the only downside you see...? What about all of the filing and computer systems designed to alphabetize lists/data/etc?

It would make more sense to switch to the metric system first. :p

Wouldn't be hard to change... just change the values of the letters in ASCII. Only thing difficult would be for older (> 15?) people in getting used to the change.

We should switch to the metric system while we're at it. It really shocked me that when I started working at a big company for a Coop that they used American instead of metric. Everything we do in class is metric and about 75% of the stuff you see online is metric, so I was surprised to see a large multi national company use the American system.

What happens when they are asked to alphabetize something? Current filing systems use A-Z.

Yeah, see there's no real benefit to changing it to match the layout of keyboards. Once you learn to touch type, the seemingly random order of the keys on the keyboard doesn't matter. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Oh I see what you did there. :Q

I remember sitting down in class and the teacher playing the alphabet song.

It always began with the line "Are you ready to learn the new alphabet song?"

I always wondered what the old order was. I was disappointed when I learned the tape lied to me. Freakin scarred at the age of 3.

because that isn't alphabetical order.

we have a winner.

it would be if we made the alphabet go qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm

Sure...lets rewrite most of all indexed items over the last few centuries.

<nerd laugh>that'd be cool and stuff</nerd laugh>
