Why not just wait for Hammer

Why not just wait for Hammer, which will make all these boards terribly obsolete. The new Hammer boards will make these boards available today about as worthless as when MMX came on the scene a few years back. Why spend money now on a dynasaur? Why not just buy some extra SDRAM at 25 bucks for 256 DIMM and skip this silly DDR (minimal improvement) generation altogether?

1) Hammer will support DDR333.
2) First Hammer mobos will be pricey.
3) I change my mobo every 6 months because I build PC for peoples, so it's not difficult to me to sell a mobo.

Satisfied?

I'm with ya on this one 100% PUNKtotalled!

I too upgrade every 6 months or so and build new computers for others so its not a big deal. don777 you will find that many people here stay current with technology! And what rock did you crawl out from under? For us gamers DDR is not a minimal improvement! I'm guessing your using pc-133? I'll keep my minimal improved Corsair XMS PC-3200

Hammer mbs may "support" DDR 333, but who would use it when much higher bandwidth memory will be available by then to take advantage of the tremendous improvements that Hammer mbs will bring. To me, investing money in DDR 333 tech now is a big waste.

then don't buy it.

The difference is that we (gamers in this case) will always be on or near the bleading edge...while according to your logic you will only have bleeding edge hardware when a major new produt hits the retail market.

I prefer option one. I buy and sell my gear quickly. This allows me to have some of the newest technology while still being able to get some money out of it when i decide to sell it. Rather if I hang on to it for 12months or longer, its value will have depriciated too much.

You must not know much about the hammer. The hammer uses DDR333 ram not because of the mothboard BUT because of the CPU (Hammer) the memory controller is ON THE CHIP. You might be able to overclock the chip and have the memory controller run faster, but the board will NOT be doing the memory of the hammer.

Also the Hammer WILL COST BIG $$$. Amd is losing money on the current Athlons just to keep market share and get people use to haveing a AMD system. So they need to make that up, and they have a PILE of money in the Hammer CPU. Either the hammer takes off or AMD goes down.

That and my Dual Athlon system will do me just fine, exp. if it can run a pair or bartons.

I'm in the same boat as you! I actually make money sometimes if I buy and sell at the right times. I picked up 256mb PC-2100 Crucial Ram back when it was $18 gotta love those days

If you can wait for Hammer, do so. There are no guarantees that the performance will be out of this world, but anything is possible at this point. In the case that Hammer is not everything you were looking for, then get a P4. Simple as that. If you need to upgrade soon however, then get the best you can.

Hopefully Hammer and Barton get released soon.

no offense to AMD.. i love em and all.. but what's their track record for 1st gen products? It's getting better, but I would still wait and let the first revision fade out.

with that, i'm also budget minded... i have a celeron 720... an upgrade to a 2000XP+ or whatever is in that price range come the winter season will satisfy me for another 2.5yrs (as my celery stick has).

my point exactly :)

There will always be something better on the horizon, where do you draw the line? It really depends on what you want and how much you can afford.

I have found that with my turnover rate of 6 months or so, I can have some of the latest and greatest without taking a total loss on the 'old stuff' when I sell it. There are always a lot of people that don't necessarily want the latest, and these people generall buy what I am getting ready to sell. This way, I can 'finance' my upgrades partially with my used gear, which makes the hit on the wallet a lot less.
