Why not just pay Iraq to disarm?!

If the war will cost us X billion dollars, and further reforms of Iraq that we are planning will cost us Y dollars, why not just pay Iraq (X+Y) dollars and ask them to disarm? No life loss, no time wasted, end result pretty much the same.. Sure, it sounds strange, paying a country like that to give up their WMD and to become nice, but for so much $$$ they would have no reason to refuse!

Am I missing something (other than the fact that George W. wants to take our army for a road test)?

P.S. Maybe not pay Saddam himself, but rather people who are in charge of the military, etc, to prompt them to get rid of Saddam and to take charge?

So we should start rewarding bad behavior by paying people off? Sorry, not right now. Maybe someday when the Democrats get back in power though.

And what do you think they would do with the money?

I don't know, improve their life style, install a shower in every home, spend some $ on their educational and medical systems, etc? Are you implying they would just make more weapons? 😉

Yes you're missing the fact that they'll take that money and sink it into the military, kind of like how NK has done. You can't pay people off because then they realize that if they threaten you enough you'll pay. That's why the US has the correct position of no negotiation with terrorists (most countries have this officially).

Strange indeed.

United States: "We're wiring you 2.6 billion dollars right now. Get rid of all your weapons, Saddam and his Baath party. You have 72 hours. Go."

Iraq: <snicker, snicker, snicker> "Oh! Oh ok! We will get on this promptly!" 😀

Call it supervisory management for the betterment of humanity, at least.

The reason it will not work is that Saddam is not about money. He is about power. As long as he can maintain his influence, he has achieved his goal. Disarming would weaken his hold, and therefore put him at risk. Good try, but I am afraid money is not the answer here.

Saddam has $2 billion in the bank if not more, yet his people starve...I dont think its about money to Saddam, its about power...and lets say we slide him another couple billion to disarm...all he is going to do is buy more things he shouldnt have...time to send a few cruise missles into his living room and get it over with

Saddam is one of the richest men on Earth........I don't think he needs more money. Anyway, this would never work in the real world......

Its not a democracy, Saddam is a dictator. To think he wouldn't build more weapons is naive...

Why not accept the Iranian plan? Have UN monitored elections with free elections and let them choose their own leader. This would give Saddam an honorable "out". And there would be regime change and democracy. No need for the US to go in at all.

But we really want to go in! Can we go in please? 🙂

You're kidding right? And if you're not kidding, you shouldn't post in ATOT while smoking crack.

The United States doesn't negotiate with terrorists, and Saddam is pretty much a terrorist. Positive re-enforcement is not what he needs at the moment to discourage his current ways.

Ok, again:

Not pay SADDAM. Pay someone ELSE in Iraq to GET RID of Saddam and to establish a good, "healthy" government. Pay to start a revolution, destroy/kick out Saddam, and make it a better country. Let them work it out, but give money to push it in the right direction. Not everyone in Iraq is evil like Saddam.
