This may seem "racist" but would you want to absorb millions of poor people from less developed cultures?
sortof offtopic:
it's not racist; and, we already ARE absorbing tens of millions of unwanted and uneducated poor people. Ever heard of the US-Mexico border?
So are the only true Americans only white skinned decendents from Europe like most Israelis ?
nope, it has nothing to do with their skin color.. the only "true Americans" are those with a legal entry visa, a real greencard, or genuine US citizenship.... but, again, that was sortof offtopic.

I dont think we'll ever see a multicultural Israel.... hell, i personally dont believe that multiculturalism will ever work anywhere. Two or three different societies with completely different ideals and base fundamental beliefs living side-by-side in peace? bah, it's never going to happen...

hell, even similar sides based upon the same faith, such as the Sunni and Shia, cant get along in the Arab lands; let alone entirely different religions.

It's similar to attempting multiculturism in the U.S. (multiple official languages, etc)... it just wont work.

History would suggest you are wrong. We don't view it as multiculturalism because we're so used to it, but aside from everyone bitching about "those damn Mexicans", our country has a HUGE variety of cultures. Hell, we didn't all come over from Europe or wherever a bunch of English speaking NASCAR fans, there were a LOT of conflicts between various groups (especially anything involving the Irish) for a while. And while our cultures sort of meshed, I don't think anyone would reasonably argue that the US is one big homogeneous culture. What tends to happen as time passes is that the edges smooth out, we don't all turn into a bunch of identical robots. The initial tensions are NOT long term trends, but they can last for a while. Obviously you can take multiculturalism too far, but even your judgment there is based on a faulty analogy...the new attempts at multiculturalism in the US are way too new to pass judgment on yet.

It's not likely but I think something similar to the OP's suggestion is the best chance for sustainable peace. Given that the land is so important to so many people you could have it be a sort of international zone. All people and faiths would be welcome. Essentially, you would say everyone and nobody has a claim to the land. At first you would have it administered a bit like Washington DC in that the international community would set laws (in DC Congress has most of the say of how the capitol is run).

Of course this is not going to happen without some fundamental changes in the world. Israel will continue to want a Jewish state with a religious symbol on its flag and animosity will build up in the muslim/arab world until Israel suffers a catastrophic terror/conventional attack like a nuke going off.

We can call it Israel.

Seriously, the Palestinians barely have a government as it is. It's disorganized to the point that they are unable to run a purely Islamic Palestine let alone one with Christians and Jews. Israel is a good 14% Muslim. Palestine is just too loaded with internal problems.
