Why no standalone DVD-MP3 players?

There's a fair number of MP3-CD players. There is tons of DVD players that play MP3s, but have a crappy interface for them and require a TV. Why not have a player that you can plop 1000 songs onto a $1 disk?

Most set top DVD players won't play MP3's off of DVD anyway.

What I really want is a Mini-DVD based player. 1.5 GB, cheap removable media, & it should be about the size of an ipod or similar (more square than rectangular, but probably similar surface area & thickness).

$20 if anybody can find me one.

I got to thinking there are a few niche markets untapped here...

The portable DVD market could add some PDA like features to their devices or HDD support (like IPOD) and people could bring along divx or mp3's on the road. If the portable players had some pda stuff in them, you could play some crappy games too. There's already a CPU in them for DVD playback, not sure how much more costly it'd be to implement some other functionality... I think the portable DVD market is a big profit center right now (compared to the home units). Seriously, you can buy a 15" screen laptop for $600 but they sell a 8" Portable DVD Player for $400+ that's just crazy.

There are no CAR DVD-MP3 players that I know of. I know there are DVD movie players, that may take MP3 discs but the functionality sucks. I think that'd be a good option to have 4.5GB of files available in an on-deck changer. Of course, I imagine the market for that is much smaller (most consumers probably don't have dvd burners and know the usefulness of a dvd drive that doesn't play movies), but, it shouldn't be that much more costly to implement a dvd drive system that also plays CD's... so I think it'd be a small gamble for a manuf.

Gameboy system's should offer some PDA like functions as well. I'd carry around my Gameboy instead of my Clie if it had my address book and a few apps I like. Right now it's just gathering dust.

is that basically like that new high density mini disk from sony?

mostly cuz dvd burning is still sorta an higher end thing, discs relatively expensive. if your burning dvds, your more likely to get a small hd based portable player instead. lots of those cd mp3 players are really low end.

Stand alone MPEG-4 decoders are highly specific, they do one thing. A full featured CPU (Pentium 4 for example) can be made to do DVD decoding, but a stand-alone MPEG-4 decoder isn't likely to be able to do much else.

No, it's regular DVD media but only 3" in diameter. Holds 1.5 GB.

DVD burners are just a few months away from being as cheap as CD burners were a year ago. $50 drives & $0.25 media isn't very high end.

eh, i said relatively. look at the prices of non sale discs. still rather high. cd burners and discs on the other hand are almost free.

Pretty much. Except none of sony's atrac crap.

that woudl be the non sucking part 😀

i think they should make car Head Units that play a Full sized MP3 DVD, that woudl be pretty damn sweet, burn 4+ gigs of songs on a DVD

hell that might even get me to get rid of XM

ATRAC sounds good to me.

My iPod is p!ssing me off when it dies out after a few days of no useage or a week?! My MD's didn't pull that sort of thing on me! But the real time speed sucked but the sound quality was great.

In a similar vein - I'd like to see stand-alone DVD players that directly support CD-audio tracks on a burned DVD. It'd be great to put a band's whole catalog on one DVD in uncompressed format. The only way I've seen to do this is by re-encoding the tracks to AC-3 which is a huge PITA.
