I don't think ATI ever promised a $300 price point, that's just what everyone (logically) expected considering its specifications. Now that we have some reviews reinforcing those early assumptions I can only guess that ATI is waiting for the X1800XT stock to sell before bringing the X1900GT's price down to competitive levels.

Do you?
With 7900GT prices start to cool down below $300 mark ATI x1900GT doesn't stand with prices >$350 - what do you think?
Or ATI waits for x1800XT to be sold out?

i think MSRP for the X1900GT is $350, so i'm not surprised that its hard to find one under $300. I'm sure if sales suck for the part, then ATI will lower the price to better compete with the 7900GT.
But if you're looking for best performance, you're better off looking at the X1800XT 512MB, which can be had for under $300. I got mine from newegg for $260 back when they had the $50 off ATI code. Sure, it has fewer pixel pipes, I'd rather have 16 pipes and 16 ROPS than 36 pipes and 12 ROPs, since a 12 ROP part simply can't keep the extra pixel pipes busy enough. Also, the memory on the X1800XT runs much faster (1.5GHz versus 1.2GHz) which makes a big difference at high resolutions with AA/AF enabled.
I would have thought that ATI would have learned their lesson from the X800 Pro - gamers don't like the idea of paying $300+ for a crippled card. the 6800GT crushed the X800 pro because of this reason, and when ATI released their X800XL a little while later, it was much better recieved cause it was a full fledged X800 core, just at a lower speed. The cut down GT/GTO formula only works in the $200 range, where people are willing to put up with cut down pipes in order to get a cheap card with the possibility of bios modding it to a full high end card.

I must be unaware of NewEgg's stock of X1900GT 'cause I don't see any.
