will sata optical drives use the new power connectors also?

You know, I'm not really 100% sure. They are *thinner* than the old 4-pin molex connectors, so maybe it was helpful for smaller drives, and/or laptop drives, and/or hotswap cages. Ultimately, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference; you just use an adapter if you have an older PSU.
