Question Why networking products have MAC address shown on the retail box?

For security, shouldn't the MAC address be a secret between the company and the owner of the device? Why the MAC address is shown on the retail box for everybody to see?

Not a risk unless someone is physically in your network since it's layer 2 and not routable across the internet.

Security from what? If someone is following me home after I bought that router, whether its mac addr. is on the box, is the last thing on my mind.

NO! The MAC address NEVER leaves the local network, and is worthless unless someone has direct access to your network.
And if they do have access, they can easily determine the MAC of all devices anyway.
