32 bit OSes only allocate up to 3GB of memory to a program.

They're still 'standarding' 512Mb for most 'standard' systems. 2Gb is barely even used right now by most programs run by average users. A gig stick is still pretty expensive so if you ask why not 4? Why not 8?

64GB of memory in a server. ;)

Like I said, Buy what you need now, and be happy.

When RAM prices get affordable, then get more. Until then, wait.

Unless you're running xp 64 or vista 64 or windows 2003 64 or any other linux 64 os...

ram is cheap... os has not change in a while... even though we had 64bit processor for a few years now..

That & very few users need more than 2 GB.

I would expect that in roughly two or so years, when the 64-bit version of Vista has become mainstream, & 2 GB RAM dimms are cheaper, we'll see 4 GB as standard.

- 2GB is faster than 4GB

- 2GB is cheaper than 4GB

- why do you need 4GB anyway? what are you running?

i am just curious. I might run some C++/Matlab code , Well I think 2G is enough. I don't want to waste my money either.

no - well it really depends on the chipset. My FX60 with NF4 must run at 2T so it's slower with 4 modules (but not nearly as slow as the paging it would be doing with 2GB!) The 975 C2D system has no speed penalty. (Until 8GB is installed then the memory is forced to run at PC5300 speed regardless of setting - but see aforementioned reason.) If it's needed, that's the point. :)

of course

LOTS of stuff. :D

4GB on a 32 bit system is a waste. If you really insist > 2GB but use XP32 install a pair of 1GB modules and a pair of 512MB for 3GB. If you install two pairs of 1GB modules you will typically read the same amount in XP32 - 3GB.

Although ram prices are expensive by 5 months ago standards, I remember in early 2005 I got Patriot XBLK+ 3200 2-2-2-5 1GB for $225US. 2 weeks ago I got Corsair XMS 5400C4s 2gb for $160 at Fry's.

Even if most 667mhz DDR2 2gb kits are around $200, that's still 2x less expensive than 2gb of DDR1 ram was 1.5 years ago.
