Why more than one NIC?

Why do I see so many people buying more than one NIC's? Or people using more than one NIC? For a huge home network? Please, I am very curious.

a router/firewall. One NIC goes to the outside, the other to the internal network.

Or they just have multiple computers that need NIC's.

It can be a 2 pc home network they would still need a proxy, has nothing to do with the size of it.

One NIC for ADSL, the other NIC for internet sharing.

You could also couple the NICs to get increased input/output.
