Why mail in Form 8453-OL when e-filing your federal returns?

I have e-filed both my federal and state tax returns using taxactonline.com. I have received both email confirmations that each return has been accepted, and will receive my refund within 3-4 weeks, blah, blah, blah.

On my federal return, it states I have to print out Form 8453-OL (which I've done), write down the DCN and sign it (which I've done), then mail it to a particular address. If e-file is supposedly a completely paperless return, why does this need to be done? Will I still receive my refund like normal if I don't immediately mail this form?

Please, only those who know what they are talking about reply. I don't need any I guesses. Thanks!

If the software/website you used doesn't support allowing you to select your own PIN number for verification, you have to send in that form. Obviously what you used doesn't.

I work for H&R Block (seasonal).

If you don't mail it, the IRS will eventually mail you one and if you don't fill it out then, you can't efile next year.

YOU MUST COMPLY. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Save your tax forms like a good little boy, & next year you can sign by entering your adjusted gross income.

If you don't save them, you have to do the paper routine.

No reason, really. I'm single only making $18,000 a year from one job. Nothing really to hide, if that's what you were hinting at. I just wanted to know what it was for, as I was under the impression e-filing was supposed to cut out all the paperwork. No biggie, though.
