At home i have a cable modem, going into the "server", which shares it out through a 24 port 10mbps hub to my computer, and my mum's when it's on. On Counter-Strike, i regularly get pings of 15-25 when playing on most internet servers. However, when i am at a LAN party, and have a dedicated server running on my server (dual Celeron 400, 192mb ram), and connecting 7 people through the same hub, my ping is about 30-40. Even having JUST my computer connecting to the server, i still get pings this high!
I know quite a bit about networking, and know that each router or hub or switch on the network increases ping, but i just don't understand why i get lower pings playing on internet servers going through my server than i do connecting directly to the server!
So, if anyone can tell me why cos i'd like to know!
Thanks
