Because even though they're not unique, UPCs can still be used to defraud rebate centers if you haven't purchased the product.

How exactly, without a receipt? If that's the case, I could go buy anything, copy the UPC, return the item, and send off for the rebate. AFAIK, an active receipt is always required. Besides, I clearly stated my intentions and as a long time member here, I wouldn't post here asking that if I were planning to defraud. It's unfortunate there's a lack of trust here. I do have the original receipt I could scan for anyone that provided a UPC copy.

Even if your reasons are sincere, using someone else's UPC for warranty service is fraud. You can't post anything criminal at AT.

Again, how is it fraud? The UPC's are identical. And I'm talking about a copy of a UPC.
What if my parents and I both bought the same product and were filling out rebates together, and accidentally mixed up our UPCs and got each others. Did we commit fraud?

People on AT post scans of rebate forms all the time, say when a company has pulled the form and doesn't want anyone else to use it. AT people after that take other people's scans posted here and use them. Is that not the same thing?
