why isn't there a good alternative to the Ipod Nano?

what are these other companies doing? sony, sandisk, RIO, iriver, samsung, creative etc. .. what the hell no one can design something comparable + cheaper? argh.

seriously what does it take to make something that:

2 or 4gb flash
screen (who needs color?)
small
good battery life
easy to use
cheaper than nano

Flash media is very expensive, and apple is selling them at the same price that hard drive based players are going for.

Nothing can compare to the Nano. Which is why Apple will sell millions upon millions.

You can find a lot of small players out there. But they don't compare spec-for-spec to the Nano, either technically or aesthetically.

It's because they have exclusive rights with Samsung for the 2 and 4gb flash chips (I think). I think Samsung got fined 300 million or something becuase of the monopoly. Or else I'm mixing stories in my head.

i love my nano. im not a fanboy at all, but it is definitely awesome. the reason there isnt an alternative is because no one can produce something similar at that price yet.
