Why isn't the United States buying Canadian Beef ?

Because of the mad cow case. However, there are sugestion that mad cow is not only a Canadian problem, because the infected bovine could have came from the US during 1998 import of Black Angus (over 70% of Black Angus came from the US to Canada).

It is hard to speculate what the true motive of the US in this situation, but the main thing that we know Canadian beef industry will never fully recover from this, just like the Canadian logging industry.

Yay for Japan, we should stop importing their cars.
Basically Japan wants a garranttee that no Canadian beef goes to Japan from the US. The US cannot give this because they have no way of tracing where their beef comes from.

Japan is being stupid and foolish. There are 100's of thousands of Japanese living in Canada and eating beef. They are not dying of Mad Cow. And neither is anyone else in Canada.

The human form of mad cow has an incubation period of 25-40 years, so there could be people with mad cow disease and they wont know it until years from now.
I know this. If mad cow has been around for a long time, then it would have shown up by now. The fact that this is the only cow to test positive proves that Japan is being stupid.

Maybe, because they have enough themselves??? After all the US wants to sell their beef here in the EU, just that we are not taking it, hormone treated meat is not allowed in the EU ...

Cows in the EU don't have hormones?

giving artificial hormones to cows is forbidden in the EU not so in the USA

That actually didn't answer my question.

Problem with BSE really showing up is, that most cows are dead before the desease breaks out. Also there used to be no way of telling other by examining the brain of such cow. Anyway mad cow desease is supposed to orignate from England where cows were fed the ground up meat of sheeps suffering from scrapie (a desease similar to BSE). Fact is all the cows that were diagnosed with BSE in Germany were born in England dunno about the other countries tho. but BSE was a nasty thing. If a case of BSE was diagnosed (or was it only suspected - dunno) the whole herd had to be killed. Also the EU killed like half a million cows after the BSE desaster (when custumers didn't buy beef anymore) to keep prices up....

You can't order canadian bacon here in arizona. You have to say "ham"

i find that pointing and grunting works best. people behind the deli counter are usually incompetent at best. i'm suprised they're entrusted with an electric meat slicer

working in the meat industry last 8 yrs come to learn a few things.

Canada has some of the best, and strictest meat precautions.

Mad cow can form in cow's for no apparant reason.

This cow that had mad cow there's some uncertainty of where it came from also, they cannot pin point where it came from exactly but its believed to have originated within the U.S

Canadian bacon, blah, it's peameal bacon...

1 One 7 year old cow sent to rendering, not slated for the food system, was found to have BSE
The borders are instantly shut down and those knowing nothing about BSE also decide to ban CWD bearing animals too.

2 After slaughtering thousands of cows this one and only one cow was said to be in contact with, NO other animals were found up to 3 rings out.
Some of these rings extended into the US as the food systems are virtually the same.

3 It is speculated that BSE IS a natually occurring disease, in about 1 of 13 million animals affecting those OVER the age of 3 years and this was probably one of those. The US has stated it believes the food system in Canada is secure and wants to open the border.

4 Japan has said that if the US opens its borders to Canada it will ban US beef exports to Japan.
Here is where it gets political. . .

Japan has some reasons though
After their BSE cow a few years ago 70% of their citizens quit eating beef, 150 MacDonalds stores closed down. They are hyper sensitive over this issue.
justifyable or not

Canadian Back Bacon and Peameal bacon are 2 different things.

Peameal bacon is really a sweet-pickled ham with a yellow crust.

Canadian bacon is a smoked, cured and fully cooked pork loin.

Damn right. Everything gets inspected way better than it does in the states.

Go check out a Canadian Abattoir. You won't find better meat choices and selections (cuts) in any supermarket.
