Why isn't the internet used more often as a therapeutic tool?

I mean, it's anonymous, but people just use it to lie their asses off about how big their schlongs are and their perfect SAT scores. Why aren't we airing on dirty laundry on here and using technology to improving ourselves? I think humans are all scared of the same things but we're too scared of the things were scared of to talk about the things that we're all scared of. Why are we slaves to this technology and not the masters of it?

It reminds me of The Grapes of Wrath, when Steinbeck wrote about "the machine" and it's insatiable appetite for higher profits.

What, free porn isn't theraputic? :D

j/k

The Internet is what you make of it. There are plenty of educational, helpful sites out there. I have gotten GOOD advice here on AT. Everything from painting, to laundry, to cooking...and a smattering of good relationship advice from a select few individuals who know who they are. ;)

For example, meeting Pliablemoose and talking about our child/ex situations has been VERY theraputic for me. :)

There are about a half a dozen others that I've "known" for three years now. And the relationships continue. Soon, I will meet some of these very people in person for the first time. In May, actually. :)

So, I disagree with you. :)

I use it in the same way.

I'm not saying people don't take advantage of it, I'm just wondering why it's not used more often by the mental health community. It's not like people have a personal relationship with their therapists anyway. I'm embarrassed to tell my counsellor things, but with the internet, screw it, at least I don't have to see physical reactions and worry that she's judging me, ya know?
