Why isn't the 7600GT favored over the 7800GT?

The 7600GT has faster core clock and memory clock speeds that the 7800GT. Also the 7600GT is cheaper.

Any insight?

Thanks

The 7800 GT has 20 Pixel Pipelines/7 Vertex Shaders/256Bit Wide Memory Interface
The 7600 GT has 12 Pixel Pipelines/5 Vertex Shaders/128Bit Wide Memory Interface.

More then just core / memory clock to a GPU.

7800GT has 256bit memory and 20 pipelines, compared to 128bit and 12 pipelines on the 7600GT.

but the 7600GT is newer technology (90nm compared to 110nm for the 7800's - correct me if im wrong). its like the 6600GT and the 6800nu. both were almost identical in performance. but the 6600GT had higher clocks, newer core, and "better" memory (GDDR3), while the 6800 had the 256bit DDR (no GDDR3) memory, slower clocks, but 12 pipes compared to 8. still were both just about neck and neck to performance.

hope that helped somewhat.

After reading some performance reviews off of Firing squad, I see that the 7600GT outperformed the 7800GT, in terms of FPS, at identical resolutions and HDR.

heh....7600 gt beating a 7800 gt?!

r u kidding me?!

firingsquad CLEARLY shows that a 7800 gt smoking a 7600 gt at all resolution and from single card to sli
i mean, the 7600 gt did not even win one game

LOL the 7800gt will bound the 7600gt like something funny, there is no way the 7600gt has a chance.
Its like saying a 6600gt has a chance against a 6800gt, which in the end it has none .

I thought of that too. One problem this test has is that you have 2 different CPUs/systems running two different cards.

Once you move to 4xAA, 8xAF the 7800GT outperforms the 7600GT.

You can see that the 6800GT gets 26.1fps in the high end test, and 41fps in the mainstream test, and they are identical tests according to you.

I just said that they weren't identical. Read my post you quoted.

those reviews also had the x1900 AIW losing to the x1800GTO, 44.4 to 51.5. obviously, there is some setting in oblivion that they've turned off for the mainstream cards.

for raw numbers, according to GPU review

  • 7800GT, 7600GT
mem band: 32 GB/sec, 22.4 GB/sec
shader ops: 8000/sec, 6720/sec
pixel fill: 6400/sec, 4480/sec
texture fill: 8000/sec, 6720/sec

obviously, the 7800GT should not be losing to the 7600GT in identical configurations.

Is firing squad considered unreliable? I like anandtech's review of GPUs much more than theirs.

In addition to other's posts I'd like to point out that the test is in only one game. Thats not conclusive proof of the card being better overall. Perhaps just better when playing Oblivion?

I dont think FS reviews are unreliable or slanted but one should look at all reviews and compare them. If a concensus of various reviews shows everyone testing a card and it being better or worse then thats probably the most likely truth. In essence...dont go by just one review. Look at them all.

There is a hell of a lot more to Oblivion than res and HDR.
Check the Introduction page where it clearly shows the detail settings used in High end vs Mainstream tests.

Compare the 1024x768x32 Mountains HDR 0xAA 8xAF in both links. You will see the 7600GT outperforming the 7800GT in terms of FPS; this is in Oblivion.

And the test systems even states that the mainsteam test's system used a slower CPU than the high end test system.

Don't let the hardware convince you otherwise, because this is another example of weird results on slower hardware.

That is how much those settings can effect performance. Also, certain other software factors (like drivers), really can effect performance at that noticable of a margin. I was confused by something like this as well when the 7900gt came out.

Anand's Oblivion Benchmark

7600GT: 14.7fps, 38.8, 60.7
7800GT: 17.1fps, 44.4, 66.4

Nothing earth shattering, but the 7800GT IS faster in Oblivion and should be faster in anything else. Only 10-15% it seems, but the 7800gt is consistently faster.

Josh, do you prefer your xtx over the 7800gt SLI setup? I'm deciding whether to add another card or not.

"Our optimizations for this article (as compared to the high end article) went much further than just turning down the view distance though, so rather than go point-by-point through the changes we?ve made, we?re instead providing our Oblivion.ini config file that we used for testing the cards."

No insight needed at all. The 7800gt is faster. The benchmarks use different setting and hardware to boot so any direct comparison would be improper like others have mentioned.

Oblivion does not have a built-in benchmark facility, and overall I'm sure how reliable the benchmark numbers are. My FPS are all over the place when I play, from 10 to 75 FPS when I'm outdoors. I'm using ATI Tray Tools, and have the FPS displayed as an overlay.
