I see them very often. I actually use them to tip my buildings door man. I got like $80 in $2 bills.

you can get $2 bills at any decent bank.

most cash registers don't have a drawer slot for them.

a friend of mine would buy school lunch with them, and also with silver dollars. the lunch lady hated him.

that was me 😛

Many of the "upscale" gentlemen's clubs in my area will only break your larger bills into $2 bills unless you specifically ask them for $1 bills.

That Taco Bell story is one of the funniest I've ever read.

One reason the $2 bill isn't that popular is that many people have a superstition that it's "unlucky". I have no idea where that came from, but I've heard it enough.

I had no problem getting a pack of brand-new $2 bills from my bank a while ago. I owed a guy $100 for a bet, so I took 50 new $2 bills, made up a "Printed especially for <John Smith> by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing" sheet which was the same size as the bills, and had Office Max bind them into a pad. The stipulation to the guy was that he could not remove the bills from the pad until he was spending them. He got a lot of funny looks from cashiers when peeling $2 bills off of a pad to spend. For some reason, people thought they were counterfeit! 😉

I just got back from England and Amsterdam, where they use 1 and 2 euro/pound coins. No bills less than 5 (at least from what I saw). I would like that here. The $1 coin never really caught on, even after they tried recently with the Sacawagea (sp?).

can't get rid of the penny because then when taxes are calculated laws would be undoubtably created to round up, costing us a lot more in the long run.

The law could require rounding down for 1 and 2 pennies, up for 3 and 4 pennies... In the long run, no one would lose or gain any money, but the ACCOUNTING might get a little more complicated. You'd know more about that than I would though. 🙂

Note: all rounding would be at the end of the transaction - this would prevent stores from manipulating their prices so they always round up.
Electronic transactions or check transactions would not need to be rounded.

There are websites out there that explain the whole idea in detail, and it WOULD work if people didn't convince themselves they'd be screwed in the end somehow.

If we did away with pennies, stores would either change prices to reflect an even number after tax, or change prices so the price always falls in the round up category.

The japanese fast food place near me has their prices set so the total comes out to a round number after tax. I appreciate that little touch to the business. 🙂

Say they want to price a cup of coffee so it always rounds up - so you make it $.98. But what if someone buys 2? Then it's $1.96, rounded down to $1.95.

Bingo! Once they the cash register, they're stuck in with checks and whatnot. They rarely are given back out as change. Add to that the number of morons who are hoarding the things because they believe they'll be worth a lot of money as collectors items some day and the result is that you'll rarely see one.

Well do they make it anymore? Can I get like 10 of them from the bank today? Would make it easier paying to park everyday at work...

They mint them every so many years.
