Why Isn't Star Wars Available on DVD?

Whatever George Lucas's marketing people have told him, they're wrong. At the rate the new Star Wars films are destroying the brand's equity, he should've gotten them out as fast as possible.

He doesn't need the money, but if he put out a 3-disc set of the UNEDITED OR CHANGED Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and sold the set for $100 USD, he'd sell an easy half-million sets the first week.

But, he's being a prick, as usual. By the time we do get them (if ever) they'll probably be so edited, chopped up and redubbed that I won't want to watch it.

Orignal Three SW flicks = three of the greatest films of the 20th Century, IMHO.

They will be releasing all 3 after the 3rd movie comes out on DVD. What they are doing is releasing the DVD's in order 1-6.

It sucks, but thats what they are doing 🙁

I will probably never understand that guy. It seems ludicrous to wait until after Episode 3 to release them - by then there may well be a new format that is better than DVD. I find it hard to be optimistic about Ep 3, considering how dreadful the first two were (especially Ep 2, which I found interminable).

On the bright side, he is FINALLY releasing the Indiana Jones movies on DVD. Unfortunately they are bundled as a boxed set, when the only one I would want to own is ROTLA.

Well I refuse to buy his Special Edition when they get released. I want the damn originals, not the version he thinks is better but 99% of the star wars fans don't want.

Maybe he'll change his mind on the Raiders Box because the fourth Raiders installment is slated for release in 2005. Harrison Ford will still play Indiana.

I saw the first three episodes (well 4-6) in a DVD box set at Wal-Mart a couple days ago for $40 I believe it was.

Respectfully, you didn't. It must have been VHS, because none of those films has ever been released on DVD. There are overseas bootlegs, but I can't imagine Wal-Mart selling them under any circumstances.

Yeah, in a friggin wheelchair..

Sorry, only Sean Connery can get away with being old and still an action hero. 😉

I wish George Lucas was here so I could kick him in the groin.

He's probably waiting to release all six movies exclusively as a six-disc set for $300 or something.

Hehe 😱 Oops. I didn't look real closely but they were close to the DVDs to that's what I thought they were. My bad. 🙂

And on that note, Sean Connery indeed plays Indy's father in the next Raiders 😀

Well, if George Lucas doesn't need the money, then he should have at least released it to keep his fans happy.

Plus, having all those DVDs out there, and having people watch them keeps interest in Star Wars alive.

My brother whose 14 has never seen the original Star Wars movies. I was going to get him the Trilogy on DVD for his birthday, but I learned that they don't exist! I'd rather he see the films for the first time on good quality DVD's, rather than crap video tapes.

George Lucas is running the franchise into the ground. There's an entire generation of DVD watchers who will have missed out on the movies by the time they come out in 2006 or whatever. Plus, as time goes by movies become more and more dated.

Because Lucas is an utter ass. He combines his "vision" with marketing to milk loyal fans for as much as they're worth. And on top of that he changes continuity which he approved in the first place to suit his whim and story telling. What made the OT magical was the fact he couldn't make everything exactly the way he wanted and now he's just confused. If the DVD versions of the OT don't at least include the original unedited versions, I'll stick to my VHS tapes till hell freezes over.

Good point. Unfortunately you, unlike Lucas, are not an egomaniacal hermit with a weird set of "ideals" that cause you to ignore your fans (well, maybe you are, but if so, it's not directly relevant to this situation!)

HAHA! Since when has Lucass cared about the fans?

Why keep your brother from seeing them at all? By the time they come out on DVD he may not have any interest at all. It's not fair to keep them from even if it's VHS.

Episode 2 was absolute crap.

I'd say Ep 1 was a lot more crap.

They were both bad, but to me Ep2 was by far the worse of the two, if only for the ponderous, ridiculous "romantic" dialogue. I had to fast-forward through probably a third of it.
