That seems silly as it is on VHS. I think it might even be on LD (not sure tho). It should be put on DVD so that the movie can be viewed in its original form (Dolby Digital and all).

its probably because the director wants to be involved in the creation of the dvd. there are many spielberg movies so its gonna take time theres no way a barebones edition is gonna come out big movies are this way....small crappy movies get spammed pretty much, just look at the shelves at frys

Spielburg for some reason doesn't like DVD too much. How many of his movies are in DVD movie format? I can only think of Saving Private Ryan and that was only because everyone was screaming at him to do it. I remember reading some quote from him about why he doesn't like DVD.

saving private ryan, ai, jurassic park/lost world, many other editions of jurrasic park/lost world, jaws, always,hook, 1941, duel, close encounters, empire under the sun, the color purple,, and very soon et i'm pretty sure amistad...not sure howsomeof these discs fare on special features.

Ok...my bad...just not caught up on the times I guess...well, I still remember him talking about why he doesn't like DVD.

Here's the deal. Spielberg (and George Lucas) don't hate DVD... they were just initially very skeptical about it catching on. You may see a lot of Spielberg titles now (although that is not a lot when compared to his entire catalog), but it was not always this way. When DVD officially "caught on" a couple of years ago, Spielberg (and Lucas) finally committed to it. But Nefrodite is correct, for the "important" films, Spielberg wants to be involved in the entire process of creating the DVD... he will have to record commentaries, assemble and/or approve deleted scenes, shoot new documentary footage, and basically make sure that every single thing that goes onto the DVD meets with his approval. It can be difficult to find the time to do all of that while you're busy shooting other pictures, attending award ceremonies, and dealing with all the B.S. that guy must have to deal with on a daily basis.

The other reason it hasn't come out yet? Deliberate, smart timing of Spielberg DVD releases by the production companies. They will space Spielberg DVDs apart a lot so they can make each one an "event". For instance they will do this with the upcoming E.T. DVD. They know they will sell more copies of it if they heavily promote it and get consumers frothing at the mouth in anticipation. Then they mass-produce the hell out of it and you will see it at Best Buy on sale for $17.99 or similar price point (a la Pearl Harbor--you know they must have made a bajillion copies of that thing).

Don't always believe the Digital Bits. It may be this year or it may not be, but it won't be too much longer.

I know I remember reading an interview where Spielberg said he doesn't like doing DVD commentaries and that he won't for any of his movies so I wouldn't look for that DVD feature.

Edit: BTW, The Digital Bits has never failed me before so I see no reason not to believe them.

$pielberg has stated he wants to run his business like Disney. Putting films on moratorium, re-releasing movies (look at E.T.), etc.

I'm sure he'll come out with a version sometime after it's 20th anniversary when we're on some new medium past HD-DVD and he's modified the film to take out politically incorrect scenes/words.


And Lucas not hating DVDs? Well, he sure as heck doesn't love them. Lucas said a year or so ago he wants Star Wars on the best possible format and then announced some new VHS release and an upcoming Laserdisc redo of the Indiana Jones movies.

I've been waiting for Schindler's List to come out on DVD for a few years now. I have no idea as to when it will be out.

Two other DVDs I want will be out by year's end or sooner, however:

1) Amelie arrives July 16
2) Band of Brothers by X-mas

Anyone know when LOTR will be out?

I know how you feel, I waited FOREVER for Braveheart to be released on DVD.

If/when "Schindler's List" comes out on DVD, I'll be among the first to buy it.

Given the subject matter Schindler's List is DEFINITELY going to have a LOT more documentary and subject matter footage than most films. I would expect this one to take awhile without looking at any insider sites.

Wasn't another reason Lucas and Spielberg are slow to release their movies on DVDS (besides the fact that it's smart marketing) is because they were heavy backers of the original Divx when DVD and Divx first came out? Didn't they have a lot invested in that or something? Even if that's true I doubt that's a major issue now. They're most likely just wanting to be thorough and professional with their productions and know that Disney has a good idea with the periodic release plan. It's VERY frustrating as a fan though. The DVD set I want more than anything right now (aside from James Bond which was taken off the market until the next film) is the Indiana Jones series. But I'm fairly sure they're going to hold off on that to tie into the release of the next film in the Indiana Jones series. Oh well.
