Why isn't one Federal branch alone sufficient?

I've always thought it would be cool to get rid of the executive and judicial branches. That would kind of destroy checks and balances, but they're not really that effective anyway, as the President and Supreme Court trample Congress. It would be hard to get a legislative branch alone to agree on everything at times, but if there was one representative per state, for example, then they could agree on more. I think that *possibly* a few of the framers would be regretting the creation of more than one branch of government if they were alive today, since a lot of them obviously intended for Congress to be the most powerful.

You could have a commander-in-chief of Congress, you could have a Congressional Treasury, etc. Federal troops under the Commander-in-chief of Congress would simply enforce the law. They could be appointed by the state legislatures.

I don't really think it would make a whole lot of difference in policy, as it depends upon what the government's enumerated powers are, but it would cut out a lot of things that are unnecessary.

They at least ought to just amend the Constitution to disallow popular election of senators and presidential electors.

So instead of a president, you want a commander-in-chief who isn't elected and a senate that isn't elected...

Why isn't one thread about your poor understanding of history and the Constitution enough?

The interesting thing is that for much of its history the UK had this system. All powers were practically under the House of Commons. And in most cases the freedoms in the UK were the same as here. All this suggests it's really what the people's expectations and demands are. Mexico may have a modern government on paper but its people never demand accountability. The UK has a primitive government on paper but its a well-functioning democracy.

I mean, ignoring the school classroom reasons why three branches is better than one, do we really want Congress in charge of making more decisions? I mean, that's just frightening.
