Why isn't gmail public yet

I think there are one of two reasons:

1. It's cool and upresidented and totally google to have an invitation only email system

2. They cannot really afford to give everyone on the itnernet 2.5GB of storage and it will eventually be phased out

I am guessing the former, but if it the latter I might stick with the email offered through my domain. decisions decisions.

and who the hell took chrisplummer@gmail.com

i am going to kill them

if you leave things permanently beta, people can't bitch about bugs.

one of my personal techniques, actually.

lol, this is true. I love the hot deal threads with free items and people complain about the color or other silly nonsense. It's FREE so don't freaking complain. 🙂

i think the invitation system is pretty clever, it cuts down on spammers from signing up hundreds of accounts (fasdfhakf@gmail.com).

I am gonna say option #2 too 😉

how many people here actually use more than, oh say 5% of thier storage?

Ive been thinking about making a public gmail account and posting it on AT so everyone and their dog could sign spam up to it to see if we could get it filled up.

I personally dont use more than 3-4% (at this point)

I am pretty sure that is exactaly why they do it.

I think they will always be able to offer this much space.. They wouldn't do it if they couldn't..

edit: and that because it keeps it kind of underground and "cool"

I think space is a big issue. Hence why Hotmail still only provides 250megs. Hotmail has 150million active users (users that have logged in once in the last 30 days).. So I imagine it would be difficult for MSFT to give everyone even 1gig of space there. But if Gmail did open to the public, there would be a mad rush, and their storage would get eaten up. I myself am using over 2 gigs on my Gmail account (great for backing up data! 😀)
