In this day and age why is political witch hunting such a popular activity? Liberal this conservative that...Can't we all just get along? Why not visit your local grocer and purchase a nice slab of meat and have a big street BBQ and say fuck politics? Seems that would be in our best interest as a nation...you know, to actually get along with each other instead of all this political infighting? Is that too much to ask?

Or are we just doomed to fail as a nation?

We've already failed as a nation. We peaked in 1945, and it's been varying stages of level to falling ever since.

To answer your question; people like witch hunting because it doesn't require thought, and it's easy to deflect blame from oneself.

Because in the old times, if you got sick, you would automatically blame on some effed up witch. You GF ditched you, you blamed it on the witch. Fairy Godmother should solve all of your issues. :p

It is just plain old fashioned sexism. No one ever goes after the warlocks.

What makes you think anything is different today than it was 200 years ago? Nothing has changed other than the people.

If you put 100 people on an island they would divide into two opposing groups, with a few holdouts who didn't agree with either faction. Does that sound familiar?

Probably carried over from political campaigns. If there was no finger-pointing, what would politicians do? Surely not talk about their own political agenda - puh-lease. That means they would have to have one that benefits someone/something outside their own interests otherwise they're just doing the opposing political parties job for them. In turn, to be politically active you just have to gun at the same people your preferred politicians do. You don't worry about what his actual policies are until he's in office.
