I don't really know where to start looking, but every time I have installed windows 2000, after a few uses the bootup tends to stall at "Loading your personal preferences..." for almost a minute. I don't know what these personal preferences are, when I chose them, or why there are so many of them that it takes almost a minute to load them. Does anyone know anything about this, maybe what windows is actually doing when this dialog box is up? Just curious, as there is very little disk activity when the dialog is on the screen and I've never been able to prevent the delay.

Do you have domain server? It is very likely, that you DNS settings on client machine are wrong

On client machine:
Goto control panel -> administrative tools -> events viewer. If you see errors dated every time you log in - you are on right track.

Right click on network places -> properties -> choose network connection -> right click -> properties -> set dns to ip address of win2k machine. If you won't be able to access internet after that, check if you have forward unresolved dns requests to .... set up properly on wi2k server machine.
