I don't know why.. it's about to reach the lowest it has been in the last 5 years.

I don't see anything wrong with Verizon.. always been around (GTE)... why?

Number portability.

They enacted a new law that allows number portability amongst landlines and wireless. Lots of people will be dumping landlines for wireless when it takes effect.

revenue of the RBOCs are declining and so are profits, only took deregulation 8 years before it started working, although we all still pay much more than we should be

maybe most of verizon's revenue comes from landline sales not wireless.

When does that legislation take effect?

How so?

Verizon Wireless isn't the only wireless company out there. The best Verizon would be able to do is cannabilize their own sales but even then they would suffer because long distance revenues would decrease since most wireless plans include long distance.

Edit: Sungod, the plan takes effect on Nov. 24.

The entire telecom industry is in trouble and has been for the past few years. The cellular industry, even more so. Sprint PCS is trading at 4.13 today - enough said. The cellular industry is among the worst out there for long-term profitability. The number of cell users can only go so high, and soon the cellular growth rate will slow due to saturization. Look to see these companies seek intapped profits in developing countries. I certainly wouldn't invest my money in any cellular provider.

Thanks.....

We are looking at getting two cell phones (w/unlimited between the two) and dropping landline all together. It would cost us only $15-20/month. It would be REALLY nice to be able to keep our current phone #. 🙂

You are not alone. That is why the RBOCs are hosed.

nov24 .. but no one knows how well it'll run.

there's going to be a seminar about it early november.. hopefully i'll get full sense of how carriers will choose the number after i attend the seminar..

my guess is that, the number goes into a 'pool' and can only be retrieved by same person...

Verizon is a different company than Verizon Wireless. VW is not traded and is privately held. VW is also the only wireless company to be in the black and they are also #1, about 10 million customers infront of the nearest competitor Cingular.
