Why is this the case? DSL

Why when you turn off your computer does your DSL modem not remain synched?

I have an older modem - a speedstream 5260 - are there any real benefits to upgrading to a newer modem? I found this at a yard sale for 3 bucks. My service is only 256/128 (although speed tests are showing like 190/70 in that range. . .)

Why does it create 2 connections in windows xp connections screen? I have the one connection from my ethernet card and another connection for pppoe? Which should I firewall?

Hope I make sense here . ..

i didnt see that till you pointed it out, i tend to not look at the stikies because they usially dont concern me

Did not read it. I have now. I had generally asked stuff here at times before cause they got more traffic and answers than when I would post elsewhere. Now that they seem to have posted asking us not to, I'll not do it again. I rarely read the stickies cause they were usually about jobs/or meets.

My apologies. . .

oh come on guys. give him a break. if you can answer his question, just answer it!!
so what if its wrong forum! a bunch of us don't venture out of ATOT and may only have contacts with the ATOT group anyway (like me!) so why not help a fellow ATOT'er out?!

episodic my guess is you don't have a router. the pppoe is a dial-up-networking connection that'll connect you to the net through your dsl modem. meanwhile, the ethernet lan one showing up is just that- just your lan adapter. the firewall should go on the pppoe connection, as that is your gateway to the outside.

newer modem? i've done a number of modem upgrades, doesn't have such a noticeable difference. at higher connection speeds it'd probably handle the data better. and some of the newer modems have firewalls bulit in and othre features like that. but other than that, if your modem works just stick to it, unless you keep getting dropped connections etc.
