i hooked up my HTPC on a 1080P 42inch and it looks good (games) For some reason thou i prefer my 24 inch monitor, i just feel right, i don't know...

Every game I have ever played increases FOV with resolution, that's reason enough for me to ignore 720p.
The FOV should not increase unless the aspect ratio changes.

This is why I still use a 21-inch CRT (well, it measures 20-inch screen). If I want wide screen I can game at 1920x1080 if my system can handle it. If that's too much, I'll set it to 1360x768 or even 1280x720 for extra performance which still looks quite sharp. For full screen it's the same way: 1600x1200 or 1280x960 or less if need be. 16:9 letter boxed on a 21-inch full screen is a little over 18-inches. That size is actually quite good imo because any bigger and I'd have to sit back further to avoid moving my head in FPS. Sure the 21-inch CRT is heavy, but I only move it maybe twice a year so who cares?

People do, but they talk about using a 1080p tv. They use the 37" Westinghouse 1080p and the 32" Aquos 1080p, and whatever else they use over 40". There are threads at HardForum and at AVS about just the Westinghouse 1080p tv as a computer monitor that are hundreds of pages long (around 300 pages long if memory serves me correctly). Those threads were 150 pages long when I bought my 37" Westy back in January of 2008.

true, but then you still have the issue of needing a high end pc to run the game maxed out. I guess lately the only problem game is and has been crysis though...

When I built my system, it was medium-high end, but I am still using an E8400 and until last month I was still using a 9800GTX, hardly high-end these days. I upgraded the video card to an HD4890 which I got for under $200, and which can be had now for as little as $125.00 and it runs pretty much everything on high settings.

Crysis at enthusiast on a 37inch screen >>>> gamer @ 19x12 on my normal 26 inch screen

No it does not. I would take the higher resolution any day. I ran Crysis on a Sony Bravia 42" at 1280x720 and it looked very pixelated and grainy as opposed to my 26" 1920x1200 which was razor sharp.

Dude its not even close. I haven't tweaked it much, but all settings at Gamer looks terrible compared to all settings at Enthusiast.

I can barely run Gamer at 19x12 smooth but at 13x7 enthusiast is silky smooth. I put 2x AA on and IMO the game looks miles ahead of the higher res with lower quality settings and is actually playable to boot.

Now yes, if you have a system that can max it out at 19x12 then yeah this is pointless but plenty of people do not.
