I bought a SilverStone FP52 fan controller from Fry's and hooked it up to my 2 case fans and CPU fan. It worked well at controlling the fan speeds through 2 wires to each fan that ends in a plug exactly like a mainboard fan connector. The only thing I didn't like is that it had no way to actually monitor the fans' actual rotation speed. I then had a flash of inspiration and bought 3 3-wire fan extension cables. I then removed the positive and ground wires from the female end of the fan extension cable (the one that plugs into the mainboard). I then cut the end of the fan controller wires and the dangling positive and ground wires on the extension wires. Next I spliced the fan controller wires to the positive and ground wires, making sure I maintained the right polarity. I then connected the fans to the resulting headers and plugged the female end of the fan extension wire with attached fan sensor wire to the mainboard. Essentially, this replaced the original fan controller plug with one that was exactly similar but also had a rotation sensor wire leading to a plug to fit the mainboard fan controller. This arrangement still controlls the fans properly, but the fan RPMs reported by PC Probe vary widely and are considerably too high. (PC Probe worked properly before).
Any ideas of why the fan sensor wire doesn't seem to work properly?
