Why is this brand new Athlon XP 1700+ so sloooooooooow?!?!?!

I just built a new Athlon XP 1700+ computer and it's running about the speed of my old Athlon 750.

Specs:
Athlon XP 1700+ Retail
MSI K7N420 Pro Motherboard w/ nforce chipset, GF2 MX400 32MB, 5.1 sound, lan
512MB PC2100 DDR Ram
Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
8x DVD-ROM Drive
4x2x8x CD-RW

I have the latest drivers etc......... I can't possably imagine what could be causing this. I am running Windows XP Professional.

Did you read the supplied Manual with the Mobo? I had a problem wth a recent sys build up that contained an ECS K7VTA3 Rev 2 with an Athlon XP 1700 posted at 1.0 ghz turned out to be a jumber to select the FSB from 100 to 133 posts fine now at 1.47 Ghz. Other than that how hot is the Pc running what is running in the background?

All the jumpers on the mobo are set correctly. So are the FSB settings in the BIOS.

I have discovered that no matter what I do I always have about 55% of my processor being used. WTF? I closed out of everything possable and the same thing........

Dude that sounds like a ram issue what type of ram is that? I have over 30 processs running and 0% load Check it out

I've been checking their forums...... it looks like it is a bios issue. Guess i'm gonna have to flash it.........

One other thing...I did come across this problem once with someone I built a system for just now struck me. Your running XP pro? Also do you have someone else logged in the background? if so that will dog the hell out of the system, I woent to my buddies at sure enough thats what the problem was had a intel 1.0ghz running like a celery 300......

It was the bios!!! I just flashed it from the factory 2.0 to 2.3. Apparently the bios that came with it had quite a few bugs. With the bios update however it works flawlessly......

dang I guess you did fix it Im glad ya got it runnin good. quick question what tyoe of ram is that, my crucial will not pull a score that high the highest I hit is around 750
