Why is this all still here?

I joined in October 2K. Over 20 years ago. I posted like a madman from then until about 2008 I guess. I just moved on. I experienced 9/11 on this forum. God that as a thread. I posted here the night I met my wife on March 15, 2005. We are still together. We own a home in Washington, DC about 15 minutes (by foot) from each the White House and the Capitol. Heck, I still have the same job as I did in 2005. Pre-pandemic I was spending a good 8-12 weeks per year in Europe for work and vacation. My hobbies blossomed beyond PC building and gaming to photography (migrated to forums like dpreview.com) and HIFI (migrated to forums like AVS) and commercial aviation (airliners.net, flyertalk, etc.).

I just thought by now most if not all of us would have moved on to Reddit or something. I rarely come here anymore, maybe once every 1-2 years.

So why are you here? Why is this all still here?

Enjoy your fun times and LULZ. You may be 20 now but blink and you will indeed be 40.

Be well out there.

Jesus...another one...Cool story bro glad you had fun here back in the day. Now everyone who is still here is going to tell you how it isn't the same as it was and how it's now dead.

1/3 of my life (21 years) visiting and posting in this forum. How time flies, surprised it's still here. 😀

I stayed after the forum folks started sending monthly coupon codes to stuff on newegg and walmart.
I've save almost $4,000 since they started doing that in 2013.

I post on Reddit too, but there's no sense of community there like this place has.
And I already passed 40 a few years ago, ya fuckin' whippersnapper!

And I'm also on a couple other forums...

Edit: I did actually leave this place too, for six years or so, I forget.
Yikes, I'm creepy up on the 20th anniversary of my join date, too!

Community. I went to school with some of these nerds & have met others IRL, plus I've been here forever. Places like reddit are kind of more on the impersonal group-think side of things (not all subreddits, but there's definitely a different vibe there than here). This place is kind of like Cheers.

ATOT is the fountain of youth!
Oh shit, when was that secret posted? I missed another great thread 😕.

Oh and reddit - have people actually been on reddit? Outside a game I was really good at and hence known, when I post it's either crickets or 'that's such a dumb question that I'm gonna cut your dick off with a chainsaw so you don't breed' type comments. Okay, I exaggerated a little bit...

Just as I begin to drift away from Anandtech, it becomes time to replace my aging desktop and I need to jump back into the technical forums to learn what is currently the latest and greatest. (AMD? really?) My current desktop is five years old, so it might not be long now...

I used to only come here when it was time for a hardware upgrade and needed to get up to speed again on PC hardware. Which is why I went through multiple accounts, because there was such a long time gap each time that each time I'd find I couldn't remember my previous account details.

I seem to have been posting more frequently recently, and venturing outside beyond the tech sub-forums, largely because other places I used to visit for arguments and stupid chat (like newspaper sites) have all either hugely cut back how much user-comment they allow (I feel like there was a particular moment when 'serious' sites all across the web suddenly decided that allowing users to comment was more trouble than it was worth)...or have been overrun with trolls (certain other forums I used to use seemed to give up even attempting to control the troll problem, so I quit). And I have an intense aversion to Facebook and Twitter.

I've barely visited this forums Off Topic in Reddit.

Some of us are on Reddit now.

This place is like a train wreck, though... you know that it's going to be painful to watch, but just can't look away 🙂
