Why is there still no turn-by-turn GPS application on the Iphone 3G?

There were some rumours that Tom Tom had a working application ready some months ago

I hope this isn't the case, but it's something that's explicitly forbidden in the SDK... so either Apple is working with Google, or AT&T to bring an app to the iPhone (I'm sure it will be paid, just like tethering... ) or they're working out the bugs. Who really knows?

They talk a lot about the turn-by-turn TomTom navigation on MacRumors.com. TomTom definitely had some sort of software developed for the iPhone, but there are various reasons complicating its release. I love my TomTom 130S, so I would love to see a TomTom make its way to the iPhone. I would much prefer TomTom mapping and routing to any other GPS functionality.

it's be great if Apple and Google can get together and just add it to the Maps app in a firmware update. . . although I wouldn't put it past apple and google to try and make a profit off of it.

You won't see directions from Google; the map data they license isn't licensed for turn-by-turn directions, that costs extra.

I don't know why they can't at least follow the gps marker. G-maps on my old Tilt did that at least.
