Why is there spam?

Dont the spammers get it? no one reads that junk anyway, it just bothers people. You would think that since it costs them time and money to send it out, and they get 0% return on it they would just stop. Does anybody really read it? maybe I am wrong or something.
 
The problem is they do not get a 0% return. They get a .00001% return and since it costs virtually nothing to send out 8 billion emails it is worth it.
 
To harvest the e-mails it may cost them money but to send out the e-mails, it does not. You give the average computer user too much credit. If those spammers can scam at least one person, they've done their job. You'd be surprised at how many people actually believe in such garbage.

Obviously the are getting more than 0% return. If it wasn't effective, they would give up.
