But, do people really get an 'F' for Fail - wouldn't that cause them distress and embarassement amongst their peers. Someone could sue for that you know. 🙂

In the UK, we pride ourselves on the fact that our kids get about a 98% pass rate on their exams. Our grades go from A*, then A, B, C, D, E, F, G then N (fail) and U (ungraded). One concerning trend amongst the middle classes has been the fact that since 95% of students get grade A-C, that people are starting to call grades D and below 'fail'. This undermines the whole concept of an exam that cannot be failed. What about students doing certain science qualifications, where the average grade is an 'F'. Would you say that the class as a whole has failed?
 
Va Beach City Public Schools use E rather than F. This happened shortly after I graduated back in '88. Thankfully I see mercifully few of these from my kids.
