Why is there no Anandtech team @ United devices cancer research project?

Correct me if I'm mistaken but aren't those guys going to use volunteers computers to come up with new and wonderful things, patent those things for themselves and then charge the hell out of everyone to buy them?
It just doesn't seem like something I want to give my computer time for. I think the right project with the goal of curing cancer would be worthy, I just have the feeling this one isn't it.
Of course this is just my opinion - but they haven't earned my trust.

Um, please tell me this isn't a "why aren't you doing this project instead" thread.

Almost every regular DC member here is already involved in a project and they aren't likey to switch because of this type of thread.

EDIT: I'm w/ NWM & Wiz as well...

There is already one Anandtech UD team.

goto the team listing and search for Anantech.

hey, why don't you do some research before throwing accusations around, eh? we have a team.

TA does have a UD team
Here is the URl
http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=70121414-6B01-4ED0-A400-8BA810DE4CE0

BTW.. I'm pretty sure that the cancer project is being run by Oxford and they will retain the rights to all the data collected. Future UD projects will involve UD making money from them (maybe).
I think this will be the future of distributed computing projects just due to the amount of time and resources it takes to run them. I can't even imagine how much time and much has gone into distributed.net. Unless there is major backing like seti@home has it would be hard for another group to start a distributed project.
Sorry about my little rant, but I just thought that it would be good to think about the future of distributed computing when/if dnet etc cease to exist.

doesn't anyone read the FAQ's in here?

this "they're going to steal the work and make me pay when i'm sick" crap is pathetic. it's so great to see people take the "i'll believe what one person says and not do any reasearch on my own" approach. let's try a little critical thinking here...

the faq doesn't say anything about it and faqs are not legally binding either. the EULA is, and they can pretty much run whatever they want under that.

Team AnandTech UD team stats
Whatever one thinks of the motives for this project, the stated goal of finding a cure for some type of cancer (in this case a form of leukemia) is worthy of some of my otherwise wasted CPU cycles. Regardless of who makes a monetary gain, the ultimate winners will be those of us who may at some future time be told that they have a curable form of this disease due to the efforts of some partnership between some corporation and a university with the help of donated computer power of volunteers from around the world. I happen to work in the medical field and have seen many advances over the past twenty years that would not have been possible were it not for the time and money spent to find better ways of detecting and treating disease.
The old saying that "Money makes the world go 'round." is no less true today. Entrepreneurs control the world, we just live (and die) in it.

Well it doesn't seem to matter how many "Correct me if I'm mistaken" or "just my opinion"
statements you put in a reply these days there are just some people out there ready to pull both triggers and blow your frelling head off.

In this time of trying to find out who to trust and who not to trust in the world of distributed computing you really do have to be careful, at least that is what I think.
Just because a bunch of big corporations get together and say they are out to cure cancer and all they need are all your cpu cycles doesn't mean everyone should just line up and believe them. Yes, there is the reality that the big corp model has worked for scientific advancement in the past, however we are breaking new ground with projects not run by them but instead by us. With over 3 million users in the seti program don't you think that if a truly philanthropic and trustworthy group started up a cancer project a lot more of us would jump ship and get to work on it? I was tempted when UD came along. I did some research and didn't like the taste of it. That's my choice, I hope they don't ruin it for other, better cancer projects. That's my opinion !

As someone who is studying drugs in school, I can say that it costs several hundred million dollars of R&D to bring one drug onto the market. A lot of drugs do not make it out of phase 1 clinical trials. Only a miniscule amount will end up on the market. Then when the drug makes it to the market it may only have ~5-10 years of exclusivity before other manufacturers can start producing generics. The patent time starts when the company applies for the patent. Since this is around when phase 1 trials start and it takes 2-3 years at the fastest for a drug to make it thru phase 1-3 clinical trials with the FDA the drug company has a limited time to recoup their costs and make a profit. Due to FDA, which happened to prevent thalidomide from being approved in the us,we are left with safe but expensive drugs. All companies are driven by profits, but it is also a big gamble for the drug companies. They sometimes end up putting all of their eggs in one basket and then you see them scrap a drug that is in phase 3 clinical trials and their stock gets cut in half or more. This is probably one reason drug companies are merging so that they will have the resources needed to develop new drugs.

I do not see the difference between it being a for profit or non profit effort on the part of Oxford and what they do with their findings. For all I know my contribution may one day help save me from cancer. The lifetime risk of cancer is 1:2 in males and 1:3 in females with 552,200 deaths in the US due to cancer in 2000.

I just don't really want people not do run ud just because some company may make some money off of the results. This screening of molecules is just the very first step in the process, and I'm sure drug companies have server farms doing stuff similar to ud crunching molecules trying to find ones that will fit into the right receptors. (Reminds me of the Slashdot? member who was running rc5 on a room of computers that were Mercks for the human gnome project. Just don't not run it because of "evil" uses of the results that are found. Don't run it because of client stability, memory use or some other problem with the client.

Some people who have been around for awhile are tired of being taken advantage of by greedy assh0les. That's why I will wait instead of naively jumping in on blind trust.

Small point here to the disenters: If you get cancer, it will cost $$$ to treat you. Do you want to spend those $$$ on a maybe treatment that might let you live another 5 years, or would you rather spend those $$$ on a cure..no more cancer, no chemo, no radiation, no hair falling out, no puking?

I just found out my Mom has cancer for the third time, this time probably will be terminal...it took little thought on my part to dump SETI and start doing UD. As a Human, it is only natural to think of preservation of the Human race. Once the cure for cancer is found, I will start caring about Aliens.

Nobody can or will produce a cancer treatment drug without being certain of a profit. It's called capitalism and my daily life and extended life is made possible by capitalism. Even Linus Torvalds has made money from Linux.

OK, I get upset about "obscene" profits, just as I get upset about "obscene" complacency and "obscene" waste.

So, I participate in the UD-Cancer project for Team AnandTech but I don't allow any of their "for-profit" projects to run, so I can't win prize money or gifts, so it keeps my hands clean of the money-grubbing, capitalistic, big-wig corporate exploitation of the masses. And I help little old ladies cross the street for a minimal fee.
