Why is there a sexual connotation when referring to some electrical connections?

Take for example RCA cables. The jack with the connector in the middle is considered as the male connector. The jack with the hole is the female connector. Male is inserted into female.:D

If you can't figure out why, I don't know what to think.

And if you think that is funny, when the connectors are connected they are mated.

Yea, most of us don't get any, so we channel our loneliness into naming stuff in male/female pairs.

We won't even talk about the sexual connotations in the IDE "master" and "slave" configurations...

Congratulations on your sixth birthday!

P.S. don't believe your uncle when he tells you the proper terms are "dude in front" and "dude in back".

It's a throwback to the industrial revolution when factories employed very uneducated peasants. They didn't know multi-syllable words like protrusion, receptacle, etc, so simple words they would understand were used. The male part goes into the female part.

Actually, this is where we get our swear words from. Penis, vagina, intercourse... all multi-syllable words used by the educated. Cock, wise and beautiful woman, fuck, all single syllable words used in every day life by the peasants, and given a negative connotation by the educated so they could distance themselves from the poor.

It's also the same reason why this tool used on a lathe, is called a dog.

Who doesn't giggle when they hear someone say "nipple" when they are in the plumbing aisle?

A better question would be: Can anyone think of a better naming system\analogy? I can't.

The current standard accurately describes the interactions.

It's called male and female because it's language the lowest common denominator can understand...
