Why is there a PAR folder in my VIDEO_TS folder? (and .layout/.lay files?)

There are about 40 of them, all 1,488 bytes. TEMP0.VBS.par ~ TEMP39.VBS.par.... some also have TEMP0.VBS_1.par, TEMP0.VBS_2.par, etc. What are these files? I'm familiar with .par files as used by parity checking utils, but in DVD videos?

Incidentally, I also have a .layout file and a .lay file in my VIDEO_TS folder. When I drag the whole folder over to the compilation window in Nero, it says those two files "may not reside in the VIDEO_TS directory of a DVD-Video compilation".

Anyone know what these .par files and .layout files are? Can I burn a functional DVD video without them?

TIA

Old message below:

OK I've got the coaster problem fixed. I burned a DVD video using BAO - Empty Audio_TS folder, and about 3.5 gigs in the Video_TS folder. The Video_TS folder also had a PAR folder with a bunch of .par files in it.

My friend tried to play it in her DVD-ROM drive (a Sony) using PowerDVD and it apparently causes her drive to dissppear everytime she tries, and she is forced to reboot. Is this a media problem, or something else? Anyone have this dissppearing DVD drive happen to them?

Ok......I have a couple of questions here. 1) Are you using USB 2.0 or 1.1? 2) What speed are you writing at? If it's 16x, try writing at a lower speed such as 8x or 4x and see if it still causes coasters. You might also check that on the DVD+ and - media. You might try writing it at 1x or 2x and see if it still messes up. If it works fine, you've found your answer. :) Keep us posted on what you come up with. :)

If you are running @ USB 1.1 you will be limited to burning at 4x (CD-R/RW) and 1x (DVD-R/RW). Also if you have a lot of USB devices running, try unplugging them and seeing if that makes a difference.

Woah! :Q are you serious? That could be my problem right there. Got any links to back this up?

1) I'm guessing it's 1.1, my motherboard is a PCChips All In One with a Duron 1.3GHz soldered onboard, something like a 810D? I'll check it when I get into work.
2) The DVDs I tried @4x, and CD-R I tried @16x. I'm sure the DVD-R and CDR medias work fine; I have burned them using my cdrw at home and the Pioneer dvd burner @home, connected via Firewire without problems.

I guess USB 1.1 might be the culprit here! I'll keep you guys updated. Thanks

Do the math :) USB 1.1 is limited to 4x for CDRW as well. USB is for mice and keyboards. Find some space on an IDE cable and test the burner there.

Ya, you'll definately want to either use USB 2.0, Firewire, or IDE/SCSI to put the burner on, or just run at the lower speeds specified and you should be fine.

DUhhhhhhhhh I'm such an idiot! I was a math major too
I'll try burning the DVD at 1x , that'll probably be the fix. Wish I had thought of it earlier before burning 4 coasters.

if your USB enclosure is not 2.0 spec and your mob/pci card is not 2.0 spec ..put the drive in the comp as an internal to test for functionality first..even some USB 2.0 enclosures have issues with burning/reading/writing due to factors such as heat/bad chip/firmware,etc. ..have noticed even setup internally burning @ 4x on my current dru510a pushing 55xxKB/sec ..seems there should be a speed limit coming up...

what software are you using?

Burn At Once 0.99B

My enclosure is def USB 2.0 spec'd... its actually a combo USB/Firewire enclosure. I have tested the firewire interface at home (Abit NF7-S) without problem, but here at work we use el cheapo mobos so its a different story. I still havent verified whethers it's 1.1 or 2.0.

try alcohol 120, for different progrram

Will do

We're still waiting....

:) I will have to test it internally at some point I guess, theres no way around it. The whole point of the external enclosure was to move it from server to server and do backups that way... now the servers have newer mobos so I think they would be USB2.0 (P4 1.8s on Intel 845 mobos)

I installed Nero (latest ver) and tried burning the same Bin/Cue... and got an error once again. Only this time I did "simulation" so I didn't make another coaster!! :)

It looks like I get some sort of SCSI-related error, much like the ?: I/O error. : scsi sendcmd: retryable error I got in BAO. Does anyone know what this may be related to? I'm thinking ASPI drivers... I will try to install 4.60 and see if it helps. Here's one snippet of the log I got in Nero:

Well, chocoruacal, you got your wish. I tested the burner out on an IDE cable internally and it just went through a simulation completely without problems. No more coasters I hope, but does my USB suck that bad that I can never use it to hook up my DVD Burner?

edit: just confirmed that my mobo's USB ports are 2.0. So why won't it work? gonna search for some BIOS updates... any ideas?

Try burning at the lowest speed possible. Also make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system and the latest firmware for your burner.

In addition, remove all other USB devices. As others have pointed out, USB 1.1 is very starved for bandwidth as it's designed for low bandwidth devices such as mice and keyboards.

if you are running XP, there is some USB update maybe that will help you!

Do I still need this patch if I have XP SP1?

Also make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system and the latest firmware for your burner.

Yeah just did that! One of the entries in the "change log" reads:

file name:030807S.rom
check sum:2F4D h
1.Patch code for USB2.0

So this may be what I'm looking for! Will update in a sec.

YEAH! that did the trick. I'm 67% on simulation in Nero 6... finally seems to be fixed, after 5 coasters. Thanks all!

I'd recommend using something like Nero for burning DVD Video, or CopyToDVD. .par files are a compression format as far as I know, and they shouldn't be in there and could definitely be causing the problem. The programs I listed above just need the files in the VIDEO_TS folder, you don't even need an AUDIO_TS folder to burn a DVD.

ty Viper.. I've registered over at the dvdrhelp.com forums, but must wait one day before I can post.

I'm not sure what that PAR folder is, but it came with the DVD as part of a package in the Video_TS folder, so I just burned it together.

I should mention again, that my DVD-burner is a Pioneer A06 firmware 1.07. The DVD played fine using the burner in PowerDVD. The DVD-ROM that's dissappearing is a Sony DDU1621. In fact I am typing on that computer as I speak - the drive has dissappeared under Windows / Device Manager. Just rebooted, and it's still not detected (might be b/c I left the DVD+R video in the drive when I booted). Going to reboot and try again.

EDIT: yup, I rebooted w/o the DVD in the drive, and the drive is fine. Inserting the DVD now... drive makes weird sounds trying to read , but doesn't detect the disc. Probably media problem...

keep the AUDIO_TS folder but dump the software program the audio_TS folder will make your DVD more compadible trust me I know, I have over 300 backups. Go here and use thier forum www.DVDHELP.com you will have better responce.
