Why is the reflecting pool between the Washington Monument and the Abraham Lincoln memorial empty?

Has it been drained? I was just asked this question by a colleague, and I didn't know it was empty.

Not sure from the question whether he is asking why it was drained (still don't know if that is the case) or why there is nothing there but water. Wierd question.

I know. That's why I clarified the question. Maybe someone in the DC area can give us the head's up.

Kinf of funny, after replying to this thread I started asking around to my co-workers if they were aware that it had be drained. Every one of them said no they didn't know that. We work on the 11th floor of a 12 story building and can look out and see the Pentagon across the street and DC across the river but cannot see the reflecting pool from here. One of the guys said he was actually down in that area but didn't go over there so he couldn't say one way or another. Guess people that live here are not the best ones to ask about the tourist stuff. On the positive side it is an absolutely gorgeous day here today, the skies are extremely clear and views are postcard perfect.

officials did a Ph and Phosphate test on the pool and discovered an excess level of phosphate promotes algae growth = attract crocodile.
This is primarily caused my small kids and visitors urinating in the pool and thus it has to be drained, cleaned, bleached and refilled.

ETA for pool fillage is unknown.

Those crocs are going to have a heck of a commute from Florida. ;) They could liven things up a bit at the reflecting pool though.:Q

I think they are draining the water so that they can fill it with mercury. This should make the reflections much better.
