Why is the PIII so expensive ?

its for those desperate to upgrade and desperate to stick with their current m/b. prices haven't budged for like 2 years or something. its been a long time since a p3 type chip has been worth it on any level. about 2 years ago it was ok to get a celly 1.1a and oc it to 1.5+ since it only cost like 40-50bux. but now for 40-50 bux you can get a frys combo that includes much faster usb 2.0 m/b with agp 8x etc and an AMD XP 2400 or whatever chip that would wipe the floor with any p3.
intel charges that much now because it knows any purchase is a desperate one

This is true. But, a gig of ram is still pretty expensive either way

This is true. But, a gig of ram is still pretty expensive either way

true, but some ecs m/b could still take plain pc 133. so u could still upgrade for cheap. not as if p3-s upgrades were cheap long ago either, many m/bs couldn't take it. slocket t didn't come out until relatively recently. when i got my tuallys', the way i used em was to modify a normal slocket with a wire/pin mod. only other choice at the time was a very expensive powerleap adaptor. its always been a sorta lousy upgrade. but well, intel wants you to buy p4, not p3

Well, no wonder it's expensive, you linked to the few-run, rare-as-hell, flagship P3-S 1.4. SMP capable, 512KB cache, 133FSB, and icy cool.

Just imagine a pair of those, passively cooled, on a DDR S370 board ... :heart: That would give a lot of current systems a run for their money!
