Why is the PII 333 so expensive!

I have a friend who had a PII 333 and it just died on him. Went onto pricewatch and these things cost $100 while the 300 is listed at $49 and the 350 is listed at $55. Why are they so expensive? Is there anything special about them? Unless there is, might have to build new computer.
 
That would make sense but all the other CPU's in that range are so much cheaper. You are right, it doesn't make sense.
 
It's the highest speed chip for a 66MHZ FSB machine, so it's in heavy demand. A 350 uses 100FSB.
 
dunno about the high demand for a pII 333. but they aren't being made anymore so the supply is very little and when supply goes down price goes up 🙂
 
Batti's right. It's all the LX and EX boards out there(maybe FX ones too, how high do they go?). 333 is the fastest P2 you can put on a 66mHz FSB.
 
Thanks for the help. I guess it could probably also oc well to switching to 100 mhz. Has anyone tried that.

Wrong.
The 366 is the highest 66MHz P2, and they ARE in higher demand because you can easily up them to 100MHz with a cheap 100 mobo/100 memory, so they are a lot more bang-for-buck than a 350 (100MHz FSB).

I don't know where you got your information but your wrong! P2 333 is the highest 66mhz P2.
 
Eman is correct here. Silicon, I think you're thinking of the mobile P2, which went up to 366 w/a 66MHz bus, IIRC. However, there was no P2 366 made for the desktop.

EDIT: Wait, I think you're thinking of the *Celeron* 366, which did indeed jump up to a 100MHz bus pretty easily.

Also, alluu: A P2 333 almost guaranteed won't do a 100 MHz bus; at least, I've never heard of a successful such OC. And, chances are the mobo is an LX, so it won't do a 100MHz bus anyways (83MHz is likely the highest). You may want to recommend that your friend get a Celeron instead. Anyone know if an LX mobo could handle a Celeron2 with a slocket?

Yeah, the highest 66mhz P2 was 333mhz, then they switched over to the 100mhz fsb with the P2 350.
 
brennan_: I disagree....I've seen several 333s get up using the the 100Mhz FSB, but lower the multiplier. Most, if not all, should get to 400MHz at least. There was a run of SL2TVs that could make 500MHz though.

Most 333s were not mutliplier locked, but rather multiplier limited...ie you could use any mutliplier up to 5.0x
 
Oh, my friend's was a SL2TV. Do you know what percentage was able to hit 500 of these? Was it pretty easy.

What motherboard does he have? Other system specs?

You can probably get a Celeron, a Slotket and fan for pretty cheap if the system will take it. Maybe up to 533mhz.
