Why is the Mazda Rx-8's "suicide doors" considered unique?

Why was it considered so "revolutionary" (to an extent) when it first came out? Saturns (and pickups) have been doing this for years without a hush from anyone, but when Mazda does it it causes huge waves?

Still not unique. The Saturn SC series and the Ion Coupe are both "sporty" coupes. The Ion Redline coupe is easly as fast as the RX-8.

Exactly. This is the first time it's been done in a sports car.

Overrated? Not really. The issues with fuel consumption and performance have been well documented. I think people have a general idea how good (or bad) the car is. It's a pretty good car - but not fantastic. I think the public knows this already. The sales figures show it, anyway.

Just a side note, but the interior is a cut above any car in it's segment. It's head and shoulders above the 350Z and on-par (at least!) with the G35 coupe.

on the straight? still not. on a track? dream on.

and it wasn't really considered "revolutionary". it was considered "smart" because the concept for a sports car that can rev to 9k, costs under $26k, all the while have the good looks of a coupe and can seat 4 adults comfortably (unlike most 2 by 2's) is quite unique.

The Ion is not even remotely in the same class as the RX-8.

edit: I'm not going to play the "around the tracK" argument, because it's a load of crap. Most cars, with a stiff and upgraded-enough suspension, will hang with a sports car around a track. The issue is that the Ion (1) is not quiet enough, (2) is not rear wheel drive, (3) does not have as nice of an interior, (4) is a tarted up $12K economy car.

Because it's a real sports car.. i have a 2004 shinka and its just bad a$$. No saturn has ever been bad a$$. I will admit, the sport at and the six speed are still pretty good cars but just ok, throw in the beefier suspension, more powerful engine that the shinka has and the throatier exhaust and wow... i love it... i dont need turbo, or anything like that. One time in the soft lambskin parchment white leather seats and you'd be hooked too... my car will blow the doors off anything named after a planet and most v8's out there, not vettes or italian cars obviously but few american v8's hang with it. just my $.02

actually since it's targeted at the economy group, it'd be considered just a coupe. the red-line can be called a "sporty" coupe at best.

I never knew they were a big deal about them being suicide doors... I just thought there was a big deal about it being a "family friendly" sports car because it has easily accessible back seats.

FWD != sports car. Even if the marketing people try to tell you otherwise.

No, the RX8 was never meant to replace the RX7, or else it would have been named RX7.

I like the RX8. It's a fun car and has enough power to be exciting without being stupid.

the 7's that you all are refering to were twin turboed and priced through the roof... the rx-8 is an exceptional value and naturally aspirated.

It's the only mass produced sportscar with one, so it's unique as a sportscar.

Do you honestly think an RSX, Celica, or an Ion is in the same class as the RX-8? Do you honestly think people are cross shopping an RX-8 with those cars?

RX-8 review: Edmunds
Ion Redline review: Edmunds

0-60 time:
Ion, 6.7 seconds
RX-8, 6.6 seconds

Quarter mile:
Ion, 14.62@97.19mph
RX-8, 15.1@92.8mph

Sounds like they're pretty similar, at least in terms of speed. :)
