Why is the Legend of Zelda for SNES called...

The chicks that you must rescue are descendants of the mages that originally took part in the sealing war. They're your "link to the past". Along with them you discover that Link is actually a descendant of the knights of Hyrule, and that was a story about Link's heritage, thus creating another "link to the past."

And yes, to use as a pun for the star character, Link.

And also because it's reminiscent of the original game for the NES. The 2nd one was completely different, and they decided to go old school. Thus a link to the past.
