Why is the currency of china some times called the yuan, and other times called the Renminbi?

It's been bothering me for a while... are they interchangable or?

Yuan is the Chinese word for dollar, or the unit of measurement of a dollar.
Renminbi translates to "the people's currency"

So yeah you can say they are synonymous.

the yuan is the general chinese word for money while the remibi is the official name of the currency

yuan men bi = dollar, the people's currency.
