Most brands have some some form of class overlap of the highest end trim of the smaller cars being more expensive than the lowest trim of the higher level cars.

Can't be right... When I was shopping for cars last summer I considered a Civic... forget the exact model but it had electric everything, auto, the bigger motor, ABS plus a decent audio system & it was like $16,800.

16,8 is about what they actually sell for, but the sticker price is 18-19 as the OP stated.(EX civic models)

You can price things out and you'd like with any brand, compare a fully loaded Mazda3 with a base Mazda 6 or something...

OT - Toyota Corolla base model is more expensive than Accord LX (middle line). Toyota's are generally more expensive, but sometimes you find good deals on the Camry line.

the new civic is quite a bit bigger than the old one too.

its probably a civic EX with navigation vs, a accord basic package anyways.

btw new civic has more interior space than an is350. so it is not quite as small as people think anymore so that is probably part of its increase in price as well.

Good point ... I wasn't thinking about the "full retail" price on the sticker!

Also I remember a Car & Driver artical awhile back where the journelists were given like $18k or somthing close to that & sent out to buy the best car they could get for the money
.. they chose a bunch of different ones, but two went for Honda's.. the first got a decked out Civic & the second got a basic Accord for about the same money.

well the civics went lower even...atlesat they used to from what i remember. the hatchback was the lowest model. the cx. its like a civic thats had its radio/hubcaps and other assorted things you'd find on a normal car nicked... got it down to almost 10k or so a few years back. i havent' checked since. the accord had no equivalent.

i dont think they are going to make the lower civics quite as big a dropoff from the EXes this time.

thats why they gave them all the same engine, during the last few versions the lower ones had a slower engine as well.

If I needed to get a new car, and I had about $18,000, I'd get the Accord VP over the Civic EX.

The Accord VP (Value Package) is now the lowest level Accord. There is no DX anymore--no more Accords with window cranks. The Accord VP includes everything that most buyers wouldn't compromise on; the deal breakers: power windows, power locks with keyless remote, air, cruise, and safety, like ABS and all the airbags. To keep the price low, it throws out little take-it-or-leave-it extras like variable intermitant wipers (the delay is fixed on the VP), alloy wheels, painted mirrors and door handles, auto off headlights, chrome window trim, extra-fuzzy dice, etc. (No sunroof, and I love sunroofs, but what are you going to do?) So it looks spartan, but it's got all of the most useful features, including safety features.

That just leaves the appearance. If you can live with the (relatively uncommon!) black mirrors and door handles, the lack of chrome window trim, and choose between the four colors, you can easily upgrade the wheels, or add a Honda spoiler or foglights. (And the stereo goes without saying, but shopping for a custom stereo is fun, right?)

On the other hand, for about the same price, you have the Civic EX. It's a brand new model, so it scores points in the me-first department, and it gets 40 MPG hwy (6 better than the stick or auto 4-cyl Accord), but the Accord is larger, quieter, and more powerful than the compact Civic. The Accord also has a new rear end that looks pretty good this time around, and it has cool LED tail lights, just like the cool but expensive BMWs ;).

For $18,000, I'd rather start with the better car and upgrade a few things. The Civic is ready to go with no upgrades required, but the Accord is blank slate.

I'll take my '06 Accord VP in blue with a Honda spoiler, and shop tirerack.com for the rims, and crutchfield.com for the stereo.

It's a great budget car with high reliability. However, the convenience and safety options on the DX are almost non-existent. You can pretty much upgrade the radio and add better floormats and a trunk liner.

166.

Civic has 140.

Accord V6 244.

the 06 accord is actually much more powerful than the 05 too. the 05 was 160hp with the old HP rating system, the new one had several tweaks to make it 166 under the new SAE system (most hondas lost about 8-10hp with the new ratings).

i know that non US accords, the change was worth about 14 hp.

i think the VP is an excellent value, and the new 06's have the new rear that isn't as bad looking. I think you get LED taillights too. the only thing that sort of sucks is the non painted mirrors which would look sort of weird, but at the worst you could pay a body shop $120 or so paint them for you.
