WHY is the Avatar 3D Blu-ray so expensive?

I just got this disc in through a rebate deal, and have heard previously that people were paying a lot for it. So I checked it out...$125 on amazon and $100+ on eBay. I think I'm just gonna sell it...people are crazy.

I guess it's because it's only available through special offers, but still...wtf?!

Because it's only available to people who bought a specific TV (Panasonic maybe?). So there's very little supply. Consequently, individual resellers on Amazon will jack the price way up.

Get rid of it before they flood the market. You know it'll eventually go to general release. You can buy it again later at a sane price if you really want it.

Perhaps because people will pay it? No DVD/BR is worth any more than what people will pay for it.

If demand dropped ... the price would plummet.

I was just looking this up because I was idly considering buying a Panasonic 3D plasma set. As it stands you still have to buy a Panasonic 3D set to get it, hence the rarity and high price. I would treat it as a rebate on the purchase price of the TV, since I don't like the movie anyway.

Apparently the deal is no longer valid. Googling shows that it ended in February and people were unable to get Panasonic to honor the deal after March 31st.

Supply and demand...I got mine when I bought a Panasonic blu-ray player...sold it on eBay for $85 last november...made for a cheap player since I couldn't care less about the movie, but if you can still get it sell it quick, it's supposed to make a general release sometime this year

Too bad you weren't on this gravy train when Panasonic first inked the exclusive deal for this. If I remember correctly, people were paying upwards of $300-$400 for this in the first few days it was on the street. Hell, that was a year ago, I'm really surprised to still see it commanding a large amount.

Supply and demand... except in this case the supply was artificially limited to create a higher demand.

It still costs the same $1.00 worth of raw materials for the dual layer BD-R as any other blu-ray.

I bought Avatar on blu-ray (non 3D) as my first blu-ray disk. I was amazed at the picture quality and cinematography, but it took me three evenings to actually finish the movie because the plot and dialogue was so stupid I kept turning it off. I haven't loaded it into the machine since I finished it.
